KISMILE Portable Countertop Ice Maker Review

If like us, you are tired of going back and forth from your local grocery store to pick up bags of ice for everyday use or a party then it might be time to invest in an ice maker.

If you are stuck with having to refill ice cube trays and waiting for the water to freeze, if you prefer the DIY option, it might be time to throw those ice cube trays out and pick up an ice maker.

Not everyone has a state-of-the-art refrigerator capable of dispensing fresh ice cubes on demand.

Having an ice maker, especially a portable/countertop one, fills that need for regular ice on demand.

There are dozens of different countertop ice makers out there, all of which have their pros and cons.

All these choices can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. We have made a handy ‘Things Worth Considering’ list at the end of this article.

Without further ado, read on and see what we made of the KISMILE Ice Maker!

KISMILE Ice Maker

The KISMILE Ice Maker is a solid contender in the ice maker market.

We were impressed with how portable the KISMILE Ice Maker is. It can be used at the park, on camping trips, or even on the beach.

The speed at which it produces ice is impressive for its size. It’s relatively inexpensive which is always a big bonus!

Technical Specifications And Features

The KISMILE Ice Maker boasts rapid ice production – 26.5 pounds of ice cubes in any 24 hours, that’s approximately 8 to 9 ice cubes every 6 to 8 minutes! We put that to the test and it does.

The machine has the option for making two different sized ice cubes: small and large.

Perfect for a variety of glass sizes and the type of drink you want the ice to accompany!

The actual quality of the ice cubes is fairly good – but this is dependant on if you use bottled/distilled water.

The water reservoir in the KISMILE Ice Maker has a capacity of 1.7 liters or 57oz which some might consider being less than its competitors but in our opinion, this is not a deal-breaker.

The KISMILE Ice Maker makes use of a ventilation fan system to keep itself cool, perfect if you’re running it on hot summer days or next to other heat-generating appliances.

As with all ice makers, depending on the quality of water being used, there is always a build-up of minerals and silt. The minerals are often a bi-product of the ice-making process.

This can seriously affect the purity of the ice cubes being produced. However, the KISMILE Ice Maker has a self-cleaning function.

To begin self-cleaning simply hold down the power button for 5 seconds.

Unlike other ice makers, this process just uses water so there is no need for special cleaning solutions, plus from start to finish it takes 30 minutes.

The ice bucket on this ice maker is not refrigerated. This could be considered a drawback if you are away from the machine for an extended period as the unused ice cubes might melt.

The tradeoff is that the water made when the ice cubes melt returns to the water reservoir, meaning it will be reused, which cuts down on the refills.

This handy feature means that you could end up using less freshwater to refill the machine in general.

If you are using bottled or distilled water in the machine you will also notice that the quality of the ice cubes isn’t compromised, despite going through the machine again.

User Interface

The User Interface on the KISMILE Ice Maker is extremely simple to use (like most ice makers).

There are two buttons on the device “ON/OFF” which as you would expect turn the machine on and off.

Holding the “ON” button for 5 seconds also initiates the self-cleaning process. There is an indicator light on the machine which has five main functions:

  • “Power” – the unit is power on
  • “Add Water” – as the reservoir becomes almost empty or is empty it will indicate this to remind you to refill the reservoir
  • “S” – shows that you have chosen small ice cubes
  • “L” – shows that you have chosen large ice cubes
  • “Ice Full” indicated that the ice bucket is full

Things Worth Considering When Searching For An Ice Maker

We see the list below as just as much of a buyer’s guide as anything else.

The points on this list are worth considering if you intend to purchase an ice maker.

  1. Establish a budget – this can seem like a no-brainer but you’d be surprised how many people dive right into a purchase. By establishing a budget (and sticking to it) you will naturally be able to whittle down the long list of ice makers and find one within your price range.
  2. Consider your requirements – again, this can seem obvious yet it is an important aspect of your decision-making process. If you are expecting to host a lot of parties in the near future, an ice maker with a larger capacity would be ideal to cope with demand.
  3. Many Ice Makers can generate a significant amount of noise – looking for an ice maker which states that operates quietly.
  4. Concerned with your carbon footprint – there are ice makers which have eco-friendly options, in particular drawing less power, saving electricity consumption. This is particularly useful to know if you run your home on solar energy.
  5. Ice size – this can be a deciding factor in the machine you purchase. Most ice makers have the option of various-sized ice cubes.
  6. Using your icemaker occasionally – if you are only using your ice maker periodically, for example at parties or on vacation, be aware of how long it takes to churn out the first few ice cubes. Plenty of ice makers begin producing ice in less than 10 minutes from the moment you add water, which is ideal if you’re only using it occasionally.

Final Thoughts

This icemaker certainly gives you enough bang for your buck! It’s a simple enough machine with no frills – that being said we like having the choice of size of the ice cubes.

It’s especially suitable for those of us who are not as tech-savvy as they’d like to be with its basic user interface. Its portability was another major bonus factor.

If you fancy making margaritas on the beach then this will keep that ice flowing.

Or if you own an RV and simply don’t have enough room for a cumbersome ice-dispensing refrigerator, the KISMILE Ice Maker is just at home on the countertop without taking up a lot of space.

The quality of the water you use has a significant impact on the clarity of the ice produced. We noticed that the KISMILE ice cube quality was impressive.

The use of bottled or distilled water has also been linked to the longevity of ice makers.

It’s always best to stick with bottled or distilled water to maintain your product. We had very few issues with this machine.

The only real drawback is that the water plug is on the bottom of the unit.

Meaning that unless you fully tilt the ice maker to one side (which the instruction manual expressly states not to) access to the water plug is compromised.

This can be a bit of a nuisance when you come to a deep clean of the KISMILE ice maker. Thankfully with the self-cleaning function, the need for a deep clean is reduced.

Wrapping Up

With many options to choose from in the world of ice makers, it’s always worth thinking about your intended purpose for your ice maker.

The KISMILE Ice Maker met many of our must-have requirements without having to break the bank. Its simple design is, on the whole, well thought out and we found it very easy to use.
